Anshuman Magazine Chairman, India & South East Asia, CBRE
As Chairman, India and South East Asia, CBRE, Anshuman pioneered the entry of professional real estate consulting services in India. In his current role, he oversees operations for the firm across 13 countries and has over 10,000 employees reporting in to him From a childhood in war torn Iran to receiving the highest distinctions at Shri Ram College of Commerce and Schillers University in the UK, Anshuman believes that opportunity plays a large role in a person’s growth story. Coming from a family of doctors, he never felt compelled to join the vocation of his parents. After completing his MBA from the UK, Anshuman returned to India to explore the opportunities here. He joined HEG ltd, owned by the Bhilwara Group. Remembering his early days as a working professional he recalls that despite being just a young executive in the firm, he developed a good rapport with his seniors. In his own words, they recognized his passion and the stint at HEG taught him the value of teamwork. After a few years at HEG, he got the opportunity to be a part of the core team that brought CBRE (the leading global real estate consultant) into India. At that time, his career choice evinced a lot of shock from friends, family and his peers. Reminiscing about the early days, he recalls how the real estate sector was highly unorganized and lacked professionalism. Fast forward two decades later, and the sector’s landscape has changed significantly. When he joined CBRE, the thought of an organized real estate management company seemed both radical but interesting. He joined the firm as Vice President, Marketing for India. Within six short years, he was promoted to Managing Director for the company’s operations in the country, making him the youngest MD in the firm. In the middle of last year, his passion, commitment to excellence and professionalism got him elevated to the position of Chairman, India and South East Asia for CBRE. Under his able guidance and leadership, CBRE has grown exponentially in India. His success story is inextricably linked to India’s economic growth story. At a time when MNC’s were slowly entering the country and setting up their operations here, there were no professional real estate services companies offering the kind of professionalism these multinationals were used to. CBRE stepped in to address those needs. Today, the firm has over 6000 professionals who work with the top domestic and multinational companies from around the world. CBRE was the first firm to bring in the concepts of professional Facilities and Project Management services into the country. During the past two decades, Anshuman has been witness to some of the most interesting developments in India’s political and corporate landscape. Having successfully carried the business through the recession of 2008, today under his able leadership and with a dedicated team of senior executives CBRE is stronger than ever. He proudly boasts that all his senior leaders have been with the firm for more than 15 years. “We are not just colleagues who work together, but a family.” On the personal front, he is a very family oriented person. Due to his hectic travel schedule and crazy work hours, any spare time he has left with, is spent with his family as he believes that quality and quantity of time with them is of equal importance. An avid reader, Anshuman listens to Indian classical and Sufi music as well as Jazz. As a young leader, he has always encouraged his colleagues and teammates to work hard and find ways to collaborate. He also believes that engaging beyond work goes a long way in strengthening bonds between team-mates. He feels that with the recent policy initiatives and the governments focused thrust for the sector, the best days are yet to come. After so many years in one sector, Anshuman still finds passion and excitement every day at work. He firmly believes that humility is very important in all aspects of life.
