Four leading UK architects have won an international competition to create new façades for a swathe of 1950s and 1960s housing estates in Moscow. Zaha Hadid Architects, Tony Fretton Architects, LDA Design and Architects of Invention have been named overall winners of a contest held by the Moscow Government as part of its ongoing housing stock renovation programme. The Face of Renovation competition – open to experienced international teams with a Russian representative office – sought ‘architectural, space and stylistic concept of housefronts’ for new homes to replace the city’s Khrushchev-era housing blocks in the city, which are known locally as Khrushchyovkas. A total of 105 applications were submitted to the competition, which was chaired by Moscow’s chief architect, Sergey Kuznetsov. Additional judges included Tatiana Guk, director of the Moscow General Planning Research and Project Institute; Elena Nikolaeva, deputy of the Moscow City Duma; and Elizaveta Likhacheva, director of the Shchusev State Museum of Architecture.
