The state criminal investigation department (CID), which is probing fresh complaints of misappropriation of properties owned by Maharashtra State Board of Waqf, has found that some waqf officials played a key role in the scam. The properties are at Pakmodia Street in Bhendi Bazaar, Mumbai, at Morewadiin Nashik, on Jalna Road in Aurangabad and a property owned by a dargah in Panvel. Deputy superintendent of police Sudhakar Suradkar, who is the investigation officer, told TOI that the CID was dealing with fresh complaints only. “Preliminary inquiry into the cases has revealed some waqf officials as well as ‘muttawalis’ (caretakers) played a vital role in the alleged misappropriation of prime properties.” The probe was launched about two months ago on the directive of the state government. Suradkar said, “Everything was done cleverly and we have found desperate attempts have been made not to leave any written evidence behind.”
