A jump in construction activity saw economic growth hold up in the first three months of the year, overcoming weakness in the rest of the economy. On Thursday Statistics New Zealand said the economy grew at 0.6 per cent in the first three months of the year, the same speed as the final months of 2018. Growth at the start of the year was boosted by construction, helped by steady, settled weather. Construction as an industry grew by 3.7 per cent in the March quarter, following a 2.2 per cent expansion at the end of 2018.
