Visakhapatnam to continue facing sand shortage
The shortage of sand may continue for some more weeks inspite of the launching of sand yards in the Visakhapatnam region. Over 2,000 projects in Visakhapatnam region have either been stalled or have slowed down due to shortage of sand since May this year. More than six lakh people including daily wage workers in the construction sector, masons and others have lost their livelihood. Currently, a tonne of sand in Visakhapatnam costs between Rs 900 and Rs 1,000 including transportation charges. As per the new sand policy, the government has fixed the rate of sand at Rs 375 per tonne and transport cost at Rs 4.90 per kilometre. However, builders are of the opinion that the government not in a position to supply required sand to all of them and it will take more time to sort out the sand crisis in the region.
