As many as 1,300 tribal families in the Nilgiris will soon see their houses/ huts, which are in dilapidated condition, replaced with concrete structures. These houses/huts of the tribal families, located inside forest areas, have been identified by the Nilgiris district administration. A proposal was sent to the government recommending new constructions for them. Of the 1,300 tribal families, 320 will get their houses constructed free of cost as they had opted for a scheme under the slum clearance board. The rest will have to bear at least 30% of the total cost of the house. Each house will be constructed at a cost of about Rs 3.5 lakh. Though NGOs received funds every year for the welfare of the tribal population in the Nilgiris under the PVTG (Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups) scheme, none was used for providing basic facility to the vulnerable tribal groups such as Irulas, Kurumbas and Kattunayakans.
