Threat of auction gets property tax defaulters to pay up
The fear of having their property attached and auctioned off has led to the recovery of more than Rs 1.15 crore in property tax dues. In all, five properties, worth Rs 1.39 crore, were slated to be auctioned between January 2 and January 9. Of the five properties, two owners paid up and AMC took possession of one as no bidders registered for the auction. “The two remaining properties — Tube Traders and Maruti Tubes — are on Sarkhej-Bavla Road and are owned by one SubhashPremji. The tax dues were Rs 24 lakh for one and Rs 18 lakh for the other. Premji cleared the entire Rs 24 lakh for one and half of the other’s dues. He has promised to clear the remainder by 10.30am on January 9,” said Arjav Shah, the deputy municipal commissioner, finance. Shah added that if the full dues not paid by the deadline the AMC will take possession of these, as no bidders had registered for the auction of these properties. The base prices of these properties were Rs 3.63 crore and Rs 2.61 crore, respectively.
