Tenants of Fort building ordered to vacant in 15 days
Forty tenants of a building in the Fort area in south Mumbai have been on tenterhooks since they received an order, asking them to vacate the premises within two weeks. If they fail to move out, they will be forcibly evicted, says the order issued by Mumbai Port Trust. The eviction order has been issued by the port trust's estate officer. Engineer building, an 85-year-old structure, on ShahidBhagat Singh Marg, houses six residences and 34 commercial establishments. Mumbai Port Trust's board of trustees had filed a petition before the trust's estate officer, alleging that the building owners were illegally occupying the space though their 50 years of lease expired in 1985. The order states that the landlord has to pay Rs 13.19 crore, with 18% interest per annum, and seeks compensation.
