Spurt in imports worries metal companies
Metal manufacturing companies are worried over the recent spike in imports, particularly when the domestic demand is looking up after a gap of a few quarters. With most large metal consumers, such as the US and Europe, closing their borders to cheap imports, domestic metal manufacturers fear that India would become the dumping ground. The situation can get out of hand if the government is not watchful and does not act in time, they feel. India is probably the only country where there is robust demand and a free import policy. The government had fixed a minimum import price of $485 a tonne for HR (hot rolled) coil to safeguard domestic steel companies from cheap imports, but this has become ineffective as the steel import prices, of late, have increased to $600 a tonne.
