Baaya Design, Mumbai’s cultural arts brand, has launched a new line of home accessories made using Gujarat’s Sadeli craft. This product line takes direct inspiration from the Art Deco architecture of Mumbai. Brought by the Parsis to the shores of Gujarat, Sadeli stands for wood marquetry where multiple strips of wood are jointly held and then thinly sliced to create geometric patterns. These are then inlaid on a wooden surface. A signature craft of Surat, Sadeli shot to the limelight when PM Modi gifted Ivanka Trump a Sadeli box in 2017. But interest in the Sadeli art form hasn’t been consistent. Baaya invigorated Sadeli with its own unique design using the Chevron. A range of mirrors, planters, vases, nameplates, door handles and knobs were created making use of the Sadeli technique in a deco-minimal style.
