With an eye on the upcoming municipal elections, the state government has decided to shelve the proposal of levying urban development (UD) tax on plots smaller than 300 square yards, which were exempted till now. The cash-starved local self-government (LSG) department this year had moved the proposal to incorporate plots smaller than 300 square yards to widen the scope of collecting tax. The proposal aimed to bring in additional revenue to civic bodies in the state to fill empty coffers. But, government has decided to sit on the proposal fearing a backlash from residents as the election to local bodies are due in the state.
