Not just hotels but a large number of unauthorized residential houses can be demolished in Kullu district. In a drive to remove encroachments along Kullu-Bhuntar highway, the revenue department has identified 170 buildings on government land which shall be demolished very soon. Although the Chandigarh-Manali national highway has been diverted to the left bank of the Beas for four-laning work from Bhuntar to Ramshila and the new highway will bypass Kullu town, there is a lot of vehicular movement on the existing road which is declared district road. After the Himachal Pradesh high court took cognizance of the shrinking road, Kullu administration had formed five teams for demarcation of land along the road. The revenue department has finally finished demarcating the road and adjoining land and identified 170 structures raised on encroached land. Nearly 130 such structures are residential houses, the other being commercial buildings. The teams have submitted reports to the administration which sent them to the public works department (PWD) for further action. PWD is sending notices to the encroachers to vacate the land within a week to avoid legal action.
