Pollution Control Board issues ultimatum to Malabar Cements
Citing failure to comply with emission standards, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has issued a directive to Malabar Cements Ltd (MCL) to submit report regarding adhering to the rules within seven days from December 31, 2018 or face closure. This comes at a time when the public sector company has incurred a cumulative loss of Rs 19.90 crore in the last eight months (till November 2018). Earlier, cement industry was given time till March 31, 2017 to comply with emission standards and was directed to submit time-bound action plan for compliance before April 30, 2017. MCL, situated at Walayar in Palakkad, had sought time till May 10, 2018 to comply with the new emission standards and CPCB granted the same. But MCL failed to do so. CPCB later said that no cement manufacturer would be granted time beyond August 31, 2018.
