Over 1,000 pledge to solarise rooftops
Over 1,000 Delhiites have pledged to install rooftop solar panels after a month-long awareness drive by Greenpeace India, the NGO said in a statement on Tuesday. A total of 1,043 Delhiites signed the pledge after Greenpeace launched the awareness campaign on World Environment Day on June 5. This is after a bus outfitted with appliances -- Greenpeace’s Solar Comet bus -- travelled around the city on solar power, making residents aware of the benefits of rooftop solar. The bus visited 12 residents welfare associations, three urban slums, 16 public places, including India Gate and Red Fort, one municipal school and the offices of the Ministry of Civil Aviation. “Delhiites have shown tremendous interest in installing solar panels on their rooftops,” said Pujarini Sen, a climate and energy campaigner with Greenpeace. She added that while people were interested in installing solar panels on the rooftops of their buildings, lack of awareness had kept them back. When people were informed about the financial benefits of rooftop solar, they became more receptive to the idea, she said. Now that these Delhiites have expressed their interest, Greenpeace will help in assessing the rooftops and connecting them with vendors in the coming few weeks, she said. Delhi is aiming to install 1,000 MW of solar capacity by 2020 and 2,000 MW by 2025. However, as of December 2016, only 35.9MW had been installed, the Greenpeace statement said.
