To check illegal sand mining and regulate exorbitant prices, the state government has decided not to open up mining sector for privatisation. As per the new sand policy, two of its public sector undertakings (PSUs) Hutti Gold Mines (HGM) and Karnataka state Mineral Corporation (KSMC) will take up exploration and extraction of sand.  “The government will have direct control to ensure transparency and accountability. If required, we’ll also consider PWD and zilla panchayats for the purpose,” said mines and geology minister CC Patil.
