NGT issues notice to Jindal Steel & Power

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued notice to Jindal Steel & Power Ltd (JSPL) for allegedly discharging untreated solid waste and fly ash on the cropland of a farmer in Chhattisgarh’s Raigarh district – about 220 km east of Raipur. The tribunal has also issued a direction to the Raigarh district administration and fixed the next hearing for July 5. Justice Dalip Singh, judicial member, Central Bench, NGT Bhopal, and Satyawan Singh Garbyal, expert member, observed that based on the inspection report submitted by the Patwari, dumping of ash was also been found following the complaint on the discharge of untreated solid waste, contrary to the conditions of the granted environmental clearance. This was adversely affecting the land and corps of the applicants, the Tribunal observed. The NGT also directed the district administration to depute officials to the area belonging to the applicants to inspect the site and submit a report. Instructions have also been given to officials to ascertain whether the the company was adhering to environmental conditions. The respondents have been directed to submit their reply along with the note of inspection done to the Tribunal by July 5. While JSPL officials did not comment on the notice, the plaintiffs Haldar Patel and Deepak Kumar said they had been fighting for the issue since 2012.
