Lack of wind keeps PM2.5 at 300 per cent than normal
The average concentration of particulate matter (PM2.5) in Gurgaon's air continued to be 300% higher than the prescribed limit. A sudden increase was noticed in the pollution level on Wednesday, after this season's first fog. The 24-hour average concentration of PM2.5 on Thursday was 240.97 micrograms per cubic metre (g/m3) at 6am, slightly above Wednesday's record of 226.40g/m3. As per World Health Organisation (WHO), it shouldn't be above 60 g/m3. The weathermen said fog will continue till at least Saturday. "Over the last two days, wind speeds have reduced drastically, with the highest level of wind speed recorded at 6km/hr on Wednesday. The wind is also likely to change direction and blow from east and north-east directions till Saturday (December 3). The changed wind speed and blowing pattern are expected to bring in more moisture, which may lead to further increase in the level of air pollution," said an official of the met department, requesting anonymity. He further said the expected arrival of western disturbances, which might improve the foggy conditions, is likely to be delayed.
