The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has recently announced a solar zones policy with an aim to boost the development of large-scale solar power projects. It has sanctioned plans to implement 10 ‘Solar Zones’ each consisting of at least 10,000 hectares of land to encourage solar PV project developers, manufacturers and investors to help achieve the country’s massive 100GW by 2022 solar targets. The solar zones shall be carved out of barren and wasteland. Interested project developers would be able to procure or lease this land from the government to set up large-scale projects. Power generated from these projects can be exported across states to help utilities meet their renewable purchase obligation.
