High Court stays white cement plant process in Sirmaur
The High Court has stayed the operation of the letter of intent, issued to Aravali Gypsum and Minerals India Limited, for setting up a white cement plant at Nohradhar in Sirmaur following a writ petition filed by locals. This has put on hold the process to set up the plant which the locals fear could have an adverse impact on the ecologically fragile Churdhar wildlife sanctuary located in its vicinity as well as the famous pilgrimage centre of Churdhar. With cement plants falling in the negative list due to their high-pollution potential, the locals had been objecting to it since the start. Though a committee, headed by the SDM, Sangrah, comprising officials from the Mining Department, PWD, State Pollution Control Board, IPH and Forest Department, which had conducted a joint inspection of the proposed 108-hectare site, had been apprised of the objections, the government had gone ahead and issued a letter of intent.
