Eco-activists oppose cement plant at Sikridhar
Environmental groups in the state have opposed the setting up of a cement plant in the Sikridhar area of Chamba district. The groups said livelihood of the people in the region would be affected as they were dependent on agriculture, animal husbandry, horticulture and collection of forest produce.The groups pledged their support to the agitated residents of the area. Addressing mediapersons here on Saturday, members of the groups, including K B Ralhan, Subhash Sharma and Neelam Sood said with the setting up of the cement plant in the area, would pollute the air and would decimate agriculture. They further said health of the people would be affected, and the drying up of water sources would be the most severe impact of the cement project. They said MP Shanta Kumar who was advocating the setting up of the plant should learn a lesson from Bilaspur and Darlaghat cement plants where thousands of persons were suffering from various diseases because of air pollution caused by the cement plants.
