Cement companies in Chennai to use plastic waste as fuel
Civic bodies grappling with increasing garbage have found an unlikely ally in cement factories. The factories have an efficient solution to the problem: They will derive fuel from non-recyclable plastic and other waste such as rubber and polystyrene. Cement factory representatives said they require a minimum of 25 acres each for the project. Machinery cost will range between Rs 20 crore and Rs 100 crore, based on the amount of waste processed. All municipalities and corporations in the state will soon send nearly 1,000 tonnes of waste every day to various factories to be incinerated and converted into fuel. There are 124 municipalities and 11 corporations, except Chennai corporation in the state, producing around 8,000 tonnes of waste on a daily basis. As on date, 24 municipalities and one corporation have already signed contracts with a few companies located 30km-50km away from dumping grounds.
