Car Parks with Cool Reflective Paint in Kolkata
The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) is taking up a pilot project to paint the concrete surface of a car parking area with cool reflective paint having high solar reflectance index to prevent the area from becoming an urban heat island. The method will be replicated to more car parking areas as well after evaluation of the results of the pilot project. “The reflective paint is meant to see that such concreted areas like the car parking zones near the New Town business club, Tata Medical Centre, Eco Park and others do not become urban heat islands,” as per NKDA. The Authority has already issued an advisory earlier this year to house owners to use reflective paints on rooftops to reduce the heat load on air conditioners. NKDA will also replicate the model in public spaces having concrete surfaces to cool the areas from the absorbed heat of its hard surfaces.
