The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had surveyed 5804 buildings in Mumbai between 2015 and September 2018 and found that 2,942 had deficiencies in fire-fighting equipment. That’s a share of 50%. This was revealed by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis in a written answer in the state assembly. Notices were issued to the 2,942 buildings under the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act, 2006. Of these, as many as 2,924 buildings rectified this. The BMC has lodged cases against 18 buildings which did not rectify shortages in fire-fighting equipment, he said. He also said that in the last six years, as many as 300 people in Mumbai and its suburbs had died in fire related incidents and 1,045 people had been injured, he said.
