2,000 guesthouses constructed in residential zones to face closure
More than 2,000 guesthouses in the city that have flouted the DTCP norms may face closure by March end, making affordable accommodation a little harder to find in Gurugram which has a large floating population. As per the recent guesthouse policy, the minimum plot size required for setting up a guesthouse in residential areas is 500 sq yards in residential zones. But of the 2,500 guesthouses in the city, apart from around a hundred, all are built on smaller plots, making them illegal. Earlier, the minimum plot size was 1,000 sq yards. Moreover, the new regulations mandate that the plots must be on sector roads with a service lane. However, the cap on the number of guesthouses allowed in a residential sector has been removed. Members of the guesthouse owners’ forum said that illegal guesthouses generate around Rs 300 crore as annual revenue, causing a major loss to the state exchequer.
