Poor occupancy hits luxury hotels amid lockdown

Amid the lockdown that has gripped India and the stern government offensive against the spread of the coronavirus, luxury properties across the country are reporting abysmal footfalls. Five-star hotels in the capital, such as ITC Maurya and Taj Palace, have 20-30 guests each, prompting the closure of restaurants in these properties, including iconic ones, like the Bukhara in the 412-room ITC property. Leela Palace, Bengaluru has two to three guests, while executives at the Taj Mahal Place in Mumbai quoted similar numbers. Taj Lands End in Bandra, Mumbai has ceased to function, according to the group's global reservation office.
