North Delhi Municipal Corporation has attached around 700 bank accounts for non-payment of property taxes. Spokesperson of the civic body Yogender Singh Maan said the corporation has attached 648 accounts and 670 properties for non-payment of dues.
Additional commissioner of revenue department BM Mishra said since April 1, 2004 — the date of implementation of unit area method for property tax calculation — it is the responsibility of the property owner and occupier to self-assess the tax of his property and deposit with the corporation within due date.
Mishra added that there is a large chunk of residents in the jurisdiction of the corporation who are not coming forward. Thus, the corporation has to attach their properties or bank accounts to realise the same.
Mishra appealed the property owners and occupiers to deposit their dues for 2018-19 along with arrears in time. “The defaulter will have to pay penalty, interest along with due tax,” he added.
The civic body, which has been undergoing a financial crisis since trifurcation, has been trying various strategies, including rebates on arrears and roping in resident welfare association, to bring defaulters in property tax net.
