Maharashtra pollution control board ties-up with two cement cos to use plastic waste as fuel

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board(MPCB) has tied up with two cement factories to use plastic wastegenerated across the state as fuel for their manufacturing plants. The apex body of cement producers in the state will have to play a major role in minimising single use plastic, said the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board authorities. Integrated cement plants will use all plastic waste that can be made available by the local bodies within a radius of 200-250 km. According to statistics, India’s cement industry has the potential to use 12 million tonnes of plastic waste in kilns annually by 2025, resulting in conservation of conventional fuels such as coal. MPCB officials have stated that the Cement Manufacturers’ Association (CMA), which is a body of cement producers in the country, will be asked to help curb use of disposable plastics. “The cement manufacturers plan to use all plastic waste generated by local bodies within a radius of 200-250km from any integrated cement plant,” stated the official.
